Greetings Augusta Regional SPCA Family,
I just wanted to give an update on my darling Buttercup, aka Butt Butt the Nut, who I adopted from Augusta Regional this past September.
Buttercup is my first dog and I love her to pieces. When we first brought Buttercup home I could tell that she was anxious, she never wanted to be left alone, was very unsure about my fiancé or unfamiliar people, and was not potty trained. Over the past seven months I have seen her come out of her shell, explore the world and make herself at home.
Buttercup was actually prey easy to potty train once we found a good schedule for her and took her out consistently, in fact we never even made it through the package of pee pads that I brought home when I adopted her! She definitely still has some separation anxiety/isolation anxiety, but she does well going to doggy daycare at Valley Vetrinary Hospital while I am at work. The staff there really love her and she seems happy to go every morning. I think that she just likes knowing that there are people near by and it’s helping her to socialize with a larger group of people.
Buttercup is still a little nervous around new people, but I have noticed that if people ignore her for awhile then she can just get to know them at her own pace. With dogs she does best around docile male dogs, which thankfully describes my moms dog Po. They enjoy taking walks together and playing when Po is up for it, though I think Buttercup is happy that she doesn’t have to share me with any other dogs at home.
When I first adopted her I remember being told that Buttercup never really played with toys, but I am happy to report that she is a very happy, silly, playful little girl! In particular she loves soft squeaky toys that she can tear apart, chase, and shake with gusto. I also discovered her fondness for little squeaky balls that she will chase for as long as I throw them. She has done well in our town house, but I am really looking forward to moving somewhere with a bigger yard where she can run and chase balls to her hearts content.
The first month was challenging as I adjusted my schedule and worked with her to help her feel safe and secure in her new home, but she has been worth every second. I love full body wiggles when she sees me at the end of the day, or how excited she is to jump on the bed and wake us up in the morning. The Butt gives the best kisses and cuddles and warms my heart so dearly.
