Thank you for your interest in joining the Foster Program at the Augusta Regional SPCA!
Our foster families play a vital role in helping our shelter animals thrive. By opening your home to a pet in need, you provide them with a much-needed break from the stressful kennel environment. Fostering also helps our dogs learn valuable skills about living in a home, making their transition to adoption much smoother.
Whether it’s a short-term stay or a longer foster, your love and care make a world of difference in preparing them for their forever homes. Thank you for considering being a part of their journey!
Types of Fostering at the SPCA
Field Trips 🚗🐾
Take a shelter dog on a short adventure, such as a hike, park visit, or coffee shop outing. Helps dogs get a break from the shelter while socializing them in a real-world setting.
Slumber Parties 🏡🌙
Host a foster dog for an overnight stay or weekend getaway. This gives the dog a chance to relax in a home environment and provides valuable information about its behavior outside the shelter.
Medical Fostering ❤️🩹🏥
Care for animals recovering from surgery, illness, or injury. Often involves administering medication and monitoring their recovery.
Behavioral Fostering 🎓🐕
Work with animals who need extra training, socialization, or confidence-building. Great for experienced fosters who can help pets overcome fear, anxiety, or lack of manners.
How do I become a foster?
- Fill Out an Application
- Start by completing the SPCA foster application online. This helps us learn more about you, your experience, and what type of fostering might be the best fit for you. Applications can be filled out here: Foster Application
- Watch the Orientation Video
- Once your application is received, you’ll be asked to watch a short orientation video. This video will cover the basics of fostering, including responsibilities, safety guidelines, and what to expect. The orientation video can be found below.
- Take the Orientation Quiz
- After watching the video, you’ll need to complete a short quiz to ensure you understand the key points of the program. This helps confirm that you’re ready to provide a safe and positive experience for your foster pet. Take the quiz here: Foster Orientation Quiz
- Watch for an Email from the Foster Coordinator
- After successfully completing the quiz, keep an eye on your inbox! A foster coordinator will reach out with the next steps, including how to schedule your first foster outing and any additional information you need to get started.
Once these steps are completed, you’ll be ready to start making a difference in the lives of shelter animals! 🐶🐾💕
